The Proposed Priority Line-up for Limited Supplies of Antiviral Medicine and Flu Vaccine

The problem: 1.9 million Americans could be at risk if the dreaded bird flu becomes a pandemic. Vaccines and medicines will be available in limited supply. So who gets the medicine first? Current federal priorities allocate the first ration to vaccine makers and health-care workers, thus enabling the saving of many more lives.

There is debate regarding who should be next in line to be immunized, reports The Washington Post. The current policy recommends providing meds to the elderly and the sickest patients. A bioethicist is leading the argument that the elderly have already had a chance to live productive lives and that young adults should be next in line. This makes sense, however a well thought out strategy must be developed for the general good. For example, people in certain industries should be given priority in addition to pharmaceutical and medical workers. Farmers, water department officials, safety officers, communications workers, teachers and of course bloggers must be saved...
